CRIMINAL REPRESENTATION
Most lawyers know very little about criminal law unless they actually practice as criminal lawyers. I cannot count the number of clients who come to see me with the explanation "My cousin is a lawyer in an insurance company and he handled this" only to find that "this" ended up in a conviction which caused a serious disruption in the client's life in the form of huge fines, lost privileges, jobs, and even jail time.
Criminal lawyers are in the courts every day. They know what a prosecutor or a judge will and will not do. They know what a client can and should do to help his case.
If you cannot afford a private criminal lawyer, at least ask the judge for a court-appointed lawyer. Don't assume your case is hopeless. A court-appointed lawyer is helpful, but that person usually has a number of cases in the same court. You are one of many. Private consultations are usually not possible All client communication is often done in the court on the day of a pre-trial or a trial. You cannot have a court-appointed lawyer for your first appearance (arraignment) when your bond is set. This is where the judge or magistrate decides to remand you to jail or let you free on a money or personal bond.
